Allergies

Allergies can cause your cat much discomfort, from digestive upset to itchy inflamed skin. Allergies come in two different forms: food & environmental.

There are numerous reasons why allergies occur, but the most common cause is an overactive immune system. There are several things that can affect your pet’s immune system function, but these are some of the most common causes we see of allergies or allergy-like symptoms.

  • Antibiotic use: recent or long-term antibiotic use can cause digestive upset including vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.
  • Eating a diet that is high in carbohydrates. Cats are obligate carnivores and their bodies do not utilize the starches and sugars in carbohydrates well. This can lead to obesity, diabetes, poor skin and coat, plaque build up, and constipation.
  • A recent injury, trauma, or dose of vaccines. These can all trigger the immune system to overreact and create allergy-like symptoms.
  • Was there a recent weather change or have you moved to a new area? Pets can experience seasonal allergies just like people can.

If any of these scenarios apply to your pet, then your cat’s digestive and immune systems may be out of balance. The products below are some ways to help restore your pet’s immune system, allowing it to do its job in aiding in the overall wellness of your pet.

We have also included some popular items for pets with protein allergies. Chicken and beef are the most common allergens, so if none of the conditions listed below apply to your cat, you might want to explore an elimination diet with a novel or exotic protein to narrow down which foods they are reacting to.
