Collagen is the main structural protein in skin and connective tissues like joints, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments. Collagen provides strength and elasticity to the hair, bones, nails, and teeth. As pets age, their ability to produce collagen begins to decline, making them more susceptible to injury, painful conditions of the joints and bone such as arthritis, and poor skin and coat health. The reduction of healthy collagen in the body is a natural part of aging, however diminished collagen can be replaced through supplementation. The earlier you begin to provide additional collagen in your pet’s diet, the more likely you are to prevent these age-related problems down the road.

Some great reasons to start giving your dog collagen today!

1) It helps to stabilize joints and prevent injuries

Collagen makes up to 70-90% of your pet’s muscles, tendons and ligaments, so the health and integrity of their joints is greatly dependent on a healthy supply of collagen. As muscles and connective tissues lose elasticity, become brittle, and loosen with age, pets become more susceptible to injuries such as torn ligaments, luxated patellas, and elbow and hip dysplasia. Adding collagen to your pet’s diet will improve their joint health and help to prevent these injuries.

2) It improves age-related joint pain

Age-related joint and soft tissue pain such as arthritis is something most pets will experience to some extent as they reach their senior years. Collagen loss in the joints plays a large role in the development of arthritis, degenerative disc disease in the spine, and tendonitis: three of the most common causes of pain in senior pets.

3) It aids in digestive health

Collagen helps to seal and heal the protective lining of the gastrointestinal tract by helping to form connective tissue and infusing the whole system with healing amino acids. This makes it especially helpful when treating pets with conditions such as leaky gut or irritable bowel disease, or for pets on steroidal medications for allergies or inflammation.

Glycine is one of the many amino acids found in collagen. It has been shown to have soothing properties that help promote an overall healthier, less irritated digestive system for your pet.
