Frequently Asked Questions

What is Butcher Blend Beef, Salmon & Tripe for Dogs?

Butcher Blend Beef, Salmon & Tripe is a coarse-ground raw food made with wild salmon, local beef tripe, beef heart, beef liver, beef kidney, and a seasonal low-glycemic vegetable blend. Its hearty texture and larger portions make it especially well suited to medium and large-breed dogs, while the combination of salmon and green tripe gives the recipe a naturally rich flavour and aroma that many dogs love. The wild salmon provides naturally occurring omega-3 fatty acids, while the generous inclusion of green tripe adds naturally occurring probiotics, enzymes, minerals, and nutrients—making this a particularly nutrient-dense Butcher Blend recipe.

Why does Butcher Blend contain tripe?

Tripe is an important part of the recipe, not a talking point that sounds good. Green tripe is the unbleached stomach of a grazing animal and is naturally very appealing to dogs. It has a strong aroma, a soft, chewy texture, and a distinctive flavour that many dogs find irresistible. We use tripe generously in Butcher Blend because it rounds out the high-quality proteins Butcher Blend uses and is a natural way to get probiotics, minerals, fatty acids and enzymes in your dog. When you "eat" your nutrition, you don't need to add it as a supplement

What are the benefits of feeding green tripe to dogs?

In the wild, dogs would normally eat their prey from the inside out. This helps break down their food by adding the fermented contents of the animal's stomach.  The animal's diet, which largely consisted of grasses, leaves, grains, and other vegetation, gets fermented in the digestive process, making it a great source of fibre and fermentation needed for probiotics and beneficial bacteria. Many raw feeders use green tripe to add variety to their dogs' meals and provide a nutrient-rich whole-animal ingredient alongside muscle meat, organs, and bone. Its soft, slightly chewy texture can also make meals more interesting, particularly for dogs that are less enthusiastic about plain muscle meat or organ-rich foods.Green tripe is also naturally rich in flavour and aroma. Its strong smell may not be everyone's favourite, but for dogs, it's simply stinky and delicious!

Is Butcher Blend designed for large breed dogs?

Butcher Blend is especially popular for medium and large-breed dogs because of its coarse grind, hearty texture, and larger portion format. It can certainly be fed to smaller dogs as well, but owners of larger dogs often appreciate the simple portions and substantial texture when feeding larger daily amounts.

Why is Butcher Blend more coarsely ground?

The coarse texture keeps the food closer to the look and feel of minimally processed raw ingredients. The coarse texture showcases quality, as in some commercially prepared pet foods that are emulsified, you really can't tell what it actually is. With Butcher Blend, you will see tongue, heart, muscle meat, fish and whatever is on the label, including plasma and blood. It also gives dogs more texture at mealtime, compared to finely ground raw food. This makes Butcher Blend particularly appealing for larger dogs.

How do I feed Butcher Blend?

Butcher Blend can be fed fully thawed, partially thawed, or frozen, depending on your dog's preference. For larger dogs, serving it partially frozen can slow down mealtime and provide a more engaging eating experience. Always supervise your dog while eating, and handle raw food using safe food-handling practices. Always supervise your dog during meals and handle raw food using normal safe food-handling practices.

How much Butcher Blend should I feed my dog?

Feeding amounts depend on your dog's ideal body weight, age, activity level, metabolism, and body condition.Large breed dogs can vary considerably in their calorie needs, so feeding by body condition is often more useful than relying on one fixed amount. If you're unsure where to start, the True Carnivores team can help you work out an appropriate feeding amount for your dog, or you can check our feeding calculator.  There is a benchmark of about 8 oz of food for every 30 pounds or so, but age, activity level, and protein all make a difference. We like to say we want to see a chubby puppy but a slender dog for optimum health.

Why does Butcher Blend sometimes look or smell slightly different from batch to batch?

Butcher Blend is made from real, minimally processed animal ingredients, so its appearance, texture, colour, and aroma may vary slightly from batch to batch. This is normal and does not mean the food is unsafe or has gone bad. In the salmon recipes, for example, depending on the time of year and season. Tripe can also wildly vary from ranch to ranch and also from winter to summer grazing. Tripe can naturally vary in colour, texture, and smell. Its strong aroma is a normal characteristic of green tripe and is one of the reasons many dogs find it so appealing.

Why does Butcher Blends sometimes look frosty when frozen?

Butcher Blends are naturally high in moisture. We use fresh meat, organs, tripe and vegetables, along with nutrient-rich plasma and blood, which means there is more natural moisture in the food than you may see in some other raw diets. When this moisture freezes, small ice crystals can sometimes form on the surface of the food or inside the package, giving it a frosty appearance. Our packaging is intentionally kept simple and minimal, so some natural moisture movement during freezing is normal. This frost is simply frozen moisture and does not mean the food is freezer-burned or lower in quality. Once thawed, it will return to its normal fresh, moist texture.
