Carnivora Steelhead Trout Diet is a whole-prey raw fish diet for dogs and cats, made from responsibly sourced steelhead trout and ground coarsely to preserve a natural, hearty texture. This recipe follows a prey-model approach and contains no fruits, vegetables, or synthetic additives.

Steelhead trout is naturally high in fat and rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA). Because of its fat content, this diet is best used as a supplemental or rotational food, rather than a primary daily protein. It’s an excellent way to support skin, coat, joint health, and overall inflammation balance when fed alongside leaner meats.

Patties are formed into ½-lb portions, making this diet easy to portion, store, and use either as a full fish meal or as a topper mixed into other proteins.

With whole-prey diets, it’s completely normal to see slight variations in colour or smell from one batch to the next. These natural changes reflect the seasons, regional sourcing, and what the animals were fed. It’s all part of feeding fresh, just as nature intended.

About Those Patties:
Each Carnivora patty is hand-cut using a saw blade. Occasionally, this process leaves visible surface marks. With fattier proteins like chicken, pork, or lamb, the blade may cause faint “burn marks” where fat briefly meets friction. While we cool the blade between cuts to prevent this, cosmetic marks can still happen. They’re totally harmless and won’t affect the safety, nutrition, or quality of your pet’s food.

Why Does Whole Prey Food Vary in Colour, Texture, or Fat Content?

Whole prey diets are minimally processed and designed to reflect how animals are consumed in nature. Because of this, natural variation is normal and expected. Animals are individuals. Factors such as species, size, age, season, diet, and farm of origin all influence how the meat looks and feels. Red meats like goat and lamb, in particular, can vary significantly. Unlike supermarket meat, whole prey proteins are not colour-graded or standardized. Variation is a hallmark of true whole prey feeding. Whole prey diets are intentionally less processed and less manipulated. Over-processing and heavy blending can create a uniform appearance, but that comes at the cost of moving away from a natural, biologically appropriate food. We’ve been offering whole prey diets for over 30 years, and natural variation has always been part of feeding this way.

Why Do Recipe-Based Raw Diets Look More Consistent?

Recipe-based diets are made using measured amounts of muscle meat, organs, and bone that are blended together to achieve a uniform appearance. While this can look more consistent, it is not the same as feeding whole prey. Whole prey diets use the animal as it exists, with minimal processing, which is why variation occurs.

Yes. Whole prey diets are formulated to be complete and balanced over time. Visual differences do not affect nutritional adequacy. In nature, animals do not eat identical meals every day. Variety and natural fluctuation are part of optimal nutrition.
