Organic Slippery Elm is an herbal supplement made from the inner bark of the slippery elm tree (also known as red elm, gray elm, or soft elm). It is given by mouth to relieve dry coughs and gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea and stomach upset. The active ingredient is a mucilage, which is a substance that becomes viscous and gel-like when mixed with water. Slippery elm gel acts as a protective coating in the stomach and intestines to help soothe and treat issues such as hairballs, heartburn, constipation or diarrhea, IBD/IBS, and gastrointestinal inflammation. It also contains antioxidants that are considered helpful for treating inflammation.
How to use Organic Slippery Elm Powder
Dosage: Give ¼ tsp of powder for every 10 lbs of body weight.
Slippery Elm can be given in its powder form as long as it is mixed with something high in moisture, such as raw or canned food, goat milk, bone broth etc.
You can also create a soothing gel with slippery elm. Stir the powder dose (above) into some warm water and let it sit to thicken. You can give this to your pet as-is. If they don’t want to eat it, you can syringe it directly into the mouth. Slippery elm has a sweet smell and is typically quite palatable to most pets.
- Slippery Elm can be given with or without food; however, if stomach upset occurs after dosing on an empty stomach, give future doses with food.
- Slippery Elm should not be given within 2 hours of any other medications as it may affect the absorption of those medications.
